Prime vrs Zoom

Hello all

please can someone help me with clarification on the virtues of Prime lenses against zooms? I'm just starting out in Nature and Wildlife photography.  I have a Nikon D90 and a Tamron 70 - 300mm zoom.  The Tamron is little more than a kit lens and I want to get something better.  Aside from the obvious flexibility of a zoois his there a real difference in image quality between prime and zoom? I dont know whether to go for a 70-300 or just a 300. What difference will there be between the image quality? i can't afford anything up around f2.8 so I guess I'll be looking at f4 - for wildlife shots, which would give the best results with regards to cropping?

'm thinking about The Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED - has anyone used these and got high quality wildlife shots

Many yhanks
