The D700 outsold the D3 because it was the same sensor in a smaller and cheaper body.  IQ was the same.  The pro for Nikon was that the D3 was out before the D700 and they sold a pile of them.  The D700 just extended the life of the sensor.

Personally, I think there is 0% chance of a D800 sensor in a D4 body.  The market for that is so small as to be irrelevant.  The cost difference will be significant, and the benefits not significant.

The only way a D4x can exist and sell is to have an even higher pixel count than a D800, something like 54MP.  Then, there is a benefit to buying it.
