Do you mean the 400mm F4 DO lens? I don't think I have ever seen that used as a birding lens, the usual ones are the 400 5.6, 500 F4 and 600 F4.

The past two years I rented lenses for my trip to Bosque del Apache. I've used the 400 f/4 DO and the older 400 f/5.6. Both are very nice lenses. The 5.6 is obviously lighter, easier to handhold. Both have given me nice images.

I have used the DO lens with a 1/4 T/C with great results.

I normally shoot BIF of a tripod with a Wimberley Sidekick. Works very well.
