Have you considered a workflow that lets you process your images before you ftp them, so you can send a high-res color-corrected JPEG or TIFF?  Unless you're working with an editor on the other end who really wants access to raw files, such a workflow can significantly cut your FTP requirements.

Also, of course, if it's possible to make your picks on-site, you might not need to transfer all 1000 pictures.

If you're solely transferring all those files for backup, a small portable hard drive might give you most of the security without all the time spent.

Just some thoughts.  I recognize that, depending on what you're doing, your need to transfer all the raw files may be nonnegotiable.
