The only reason to prevent edits is to keep people from claiming they did or didn't say specific things in their original posts.  It's really childish.  But if that's what goes on, I guess it has to be dealt with.  But you would think you could do that by suspending or banning repeat offenders, still allowing other people to function like adults.

All that being said, a short editing window would bother me less if there were a preview pane/function so you could see how your post will actually look WYSIWYG-fashion.  As it stands, the window for editing should be at least a couple of hours or a day.   Not everyone goes back and stares at their posts over and over again just after they've posted, sometimes you notice things the next day, even if no one else calls you on them...
