I offer my sincere apologies Claire.

I acted regretfully when I saw the list of dollar values of the cameras in question. My honest opinion is that for photos of cats, any of the Canon line of Rebel DSLRs would be adequate. I'd suggest the Canon Rebel T2i or T3i as an excellent starting point.  I'd also suggest the Canon EF-S 60mm macro as an excellent lens to produce fur detail and general cat portraits.
