I travel a lot and have used the 18-200 DX VR lens up to now on my D70. I am planning to buy the D600, but not sure if I should go with the kit lens deal plus the 70-300 VR zoom for sports, or sell the kit 24-85 lens and get the 28-300. Has anyone compared these lenses? Thanks.

I have had great success with the 28-300 VR and rarely miss a shot while on a hike or traveling light. I also have the 70-200 2.8 VR lens that is my "go-to" lens in the right conditions. Find a dealer with a reasonable return policy and give your choices a try! Here are my results in daily shooting.

It's also a good lens for both D7000. IMHO.

Thanks. Interesting how some people love the 28-300 and others say they wouldn't use it if you gave it to them.

Well this is the Internet and some that have never used will always prejudge!

Personally I like it's versatility and I find the IQ perfectly acceptable for it's intended purpose, a all in one travel Zoom.  Just for the record I have a 16-35 / 24-70 and 70-200 and of course these perform much better then the 28-300, but dont let that put you off.

Here's a few holiday snaps from a recent trip to Cuba.  Taken with D800 and 28-300.  Quality is lost when presenting on here but I am very happy with the end results in print (up to A3).

Cheers, Mark.
