known for glass

I don't see any advantage for someone who has been using either canon or nikon professionally for many years to suddenly jump to another camera company. Not only are you no longer able to use your old lenses, but Sony isn't exactly known for their glass.

Carl Zeiss is known for there glass. And only make AF lenses for Sony.

Minolta is / was known for there glass. And purchasing there Camera business was how Sony jump started there DSLR market (and they retained the lens mount).

I gotta imagine, based on the portfolio described here of the celebrity weddings he's photographed, that if he think $10K is going to make his output better, even if that improvement is ever so slight, he's going to spend it.  He's probably working very hard to maintain the very best quality he possibly can, and is getting paid accordingly.
