I got my lens back from the Tamron repair centre today.  They were able to identify the problem and correct it!  They actually went a little overboard, and now the lens very slightly underexposes above f/2.8 - however, it's minor and much more easily corrected than over-exposures, IMO.

One interesting note: when I took the lens in, the focus was spot-on.  Now, the lens seems to front-focus slightly.  Not an issue; it's easily corrected through fine-tuning in the camera, but I guess they had to take some bits and bobs out of the lens in the process of fixing the aperture lever.
