Re: Lets talk about super zooms : 18-200, 18-270 etc...

I just got and am trying out the new Sigma 18-250 Macro, which is supposedly similar to the prior model except for body, filter size, and absence of OS.

Operationally it is quiet, relatively fast AF, no lens creep at all, and a solid well balanced feel.  I don't care for Sigma 1yr. warranty, but didn't like what I've seen and read about the Tamron 18-270 lens creep problem.  Yes, it is a dim lens compared to my 35mm 1.8, but most zooms will be until you get in the high price range.

I would have preferred a Sony lens to get the A57 in camera correction, but the Sony 18-250 screw drive is just outdated, the 55-300 has a front rotating focus (no good for polarizer or ND), and the 18-135 lacks the range I'd like, though it would have been alternative choice over the Sigma.

Always trade-offs on zooms for the convenience, hard part is deciding between what's available at a reasonable price.
