Honestly, I would put the camera on "P" (Program Auto Exposure) until you have time to play around with the other modes (Tv, Av, and M). "P" gives you the ability to do exposure compensation (overriding the camera's decision for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) which will allow you to make the image brighter or darker to your taste.

If you put the camera on the green square or one of the scene modes (mountain, running man, flower, etc.), you cannot override the camera's choice.

If you do put ISO in auto mode, I would go into the menu settings and make sure you specify a maximum ISO setting so the camera doesn't go above it (higher ISO means noisier images).
