I have installed Avast, does that mean Win Defender is automatically disabled? And which one between the two is more efficient?

I've read that Win8 will disable Defender if a third party anti-virus is installed so that should be the case for you.  Just what I read though, with no personal experience.

I'm running MS Security Essentials on my Win7 tower PC so I'll just stay with Win Defender on my Win8 laptop.  I think MS will have even more of an incentive to make both MSE and WD as secure as possible to protect their new OS (Win8) from getting a bad rap.  So as Shalom2006 said, I believe WD will be quite adequate and both will be good enough for me.

Best regards,
