Lets talk about super zooms : 18-200, 18-270 etc...

Now I confess that I am not generally a fan of these lenses.  Or I do not think I am, maybe its just prejudice.  I like my glass fast, with a min of 2.8 if possible.  Even then, I have a soft spot for primes.

But there are times when you need the reach. And you just aren't going to carry your bag around and be the photographer guy with the big bag.  You want to keep it simple.

So what are my options?

First I look at the Sony DT 18-200.  Any good? What's the experience around here ?

Did'nt Sony offer an 18-250? Maybe that's better? Some shops still seem to have some.

And what of the Tamron 18-270 or its Sigma equivalent?

These lenses are slow enough as it is in terms of maximum aperture,so I don't fancy having to stop down to F8 before I get some sharpness.  What are these lenses like wide open?

And do they tend to be better at the tele end than the wide end, or vice versa?

I'm shooting A77.

The  wise opinions of  the DPR collective are welcome.

Thank you.

Sony SLT-A77
