I have installed Avast, does that mean Win Defender is automatically disabled? And which one between the two is more efficient?

I had Avast which caused  a blue screen DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (a BOSD). I did not know what the cause was. However after 3 reboots I was offered 'Advanced Options' and I chose to 'Restore' to a previous restore point. Completely resolved. It was not my SSD, which I originally was concerned about. It was the Avast program update (this is mentioned on many forums). So now I will not use it. Windows Defender is quite adequate in my opinion.
