Was the D7000 just a place-holder camera?

It's sensor only made it into one other body, the D5100, which is pretty much now replaced by the D5200 and its 24MP sensor. Never made into a D300 replacement, or into the entry level D3xxx line. Interesting. It just seems Nikon knew they could do better, but just released it as -- for lack of a better term -- place-holder, with no real plans for line-wide of use of the D7000 16MP sensor. Just thinking aloud here, but in retrospect it seems that sensor was perhaps known internally to have some limitations, which some of us have grappled with under the guise of skin tones or red channel response? Thoughts?
