The FEL button on the back of the Canon cameras does a TTL pre-flash and records the exposure required, based on what the metering area set saw (evaluative, center weight or spot).  A lot of photographers meter the area they want, then recompose and shoot by depressing the trigger button.

It does help a little, because it reads what you want it to read, shoot what you want to shoot and since there is a delay between pre-flash and fire, may give you images without blinks.
