Old Sigma flashes don't work on newer bodies in E-TTL, but they work in manual mode?

Hello all,

I currently own a 350D and a Sigma EF-500 DG Super flash unit. I am going to upgrade to a newer body (either 650D or 60D, still undecided) and I know that the flash won't work in E-TTL mode on the new camera unless its firmware is reflashed. Sigma Italia charges a solid €50 + two-way shipping for this, so I'm wondering: would it at least work in manual mode, ie. using the traditional "dumb" hot-shoe with two contacts only?

When I use it with my cheap Cactus V2 wireless receiver, I have to set it in slave mode C0 for it to work, as the hot shoe only has the traditional two main contacts. I wonder if I would have to somehow cover the other E-TTL pins so that the camera only sees the main leads.

I'll end up keeping it as a wireless flash anyway, but I'd like to know what to expect if I ever have to use it on camera.

Thanks!
