Re: Considering d7000, need a sports lens

What sports? In my film days, I owned a Nikon 300mm ED lens. Perfect for ice hockey (but too slow) and OK for soccer if you were willing to walk around.

But for surfing, it wouldn't cut it and I often rented a 400mm for that. So, the equivalent for DX would be a 200mm lens, or a 300mm for longer range sports.

I just bought the AF 80-200mm ED lens. Still being manufactured. No silent wave, but the screwdriver system of focus works well enough to mount on a D7000. Plenty are for sale on eBay. New price is about $1100, half of what the AF-S 70-200 costs. And while it doesn't have VR, the f2.8 means if you have reasonably good light you can crank the shutter speed up to 1/250, so who cares?

Testing the 80-200 I shot some low flying jets and focus was fast enough for me.
