If you will be using the lens for sports, you need Zoom, and I would go for Sigma 120-300 2.8 But for wildlife I find it a bit too heavy.

I have been using both the 400mm and 100-400mm. I kept the 100-400mm and here are some examples why:

and then some close up work - yes the 100-400mm is superior when it comes to close work compared with the other two choices you had.

Good luck with you lens choice - both the 400mm and the 100-400mm are great lenses, the best one will be the one that suits your needs.
