You're missing the bigger picture, companies don't set prices in a vacuum, but based upon their competitors.

Look up Amazon's current sales rankings for DSLRs.

The top three are aggressively priced Canons, the (#1) T3i, (#2) T3 and (#3) T4i, beating out the equally or more aggressively priced (#4) Nikon 5100 and  (#6) 3100.

Nikon is running sales at least as big as Canon when it comes to just camera and lens, the two are duking it out for holiday sales of lower end DSLRs - and as usual, Canon is winning.
