In the reviews here the 500D shows considerably more noise at high ISO (>1600) than the 450D.

The 450D and the 40D are similar, with the 450D having a slight advantage due to more pixels, but the noise characteristics are similar. The 550D is slightly cleaner at same ISO than the 500D. How does the 40D compare with the 550D in the higher ISOs? I'm talking about RAW output. Has anyone done a comparison? I'm asking this because I noticed noise in the sky in pictures taken at ISO as low as 200 with my 550d (unprocessed). I don't remember this with the 40D.

I'm not sure what you mean with raw output. In order to see raw it must first be converted, unless you are using a utility that merely shows you the embedded jpg, in which case you are still viewing a converted to jpg image.

IMHO the 550D has a cleaner look in high ISO than the 40D. Admittedly though I sold my 40d long before I got the 550D so I never did a sis by side comparison.
