Wide range and quality are usually at odds with each other. I'd value having a nice, sharp, fast lens in the normal range over having one lens to cover a wide range. So my recommendation for the 17-55 f/2.8. Then add something like the 70-200 f/4 to cover the long end (or several other options).

I have been reading about that very issue of finding quality on both ends of the range on a single lens.  The 70-200 has always been the lens I want to get.  Since I have the 55-250 and it's a good copy, I have been using that for now.  Since I do more event photos, I thought I should get the 24-105 first but now I just may grab the 17-55 and slap on the 55-250 if needed.  7 months ago my plan was the 15-85 and 70-200 but after being in the hobby for a while I think I'd like the 17-55 instead.
