The old 28mm f2.8 is only 20mm longer than the 40mm pancake.   That's not even one inch.   Technically it is not a pancake, but it has the same result. You can also generally find them used for under $250.

35mm f2 and 50mm f1.8 are also only an inch longer than the 40mm.
