Follow up on my question.

I asked if it's worth it to install a SSD in a Vista laptop.
Short answer:  Yes!

Long answer:
I have an older Dell Studio 1537 laptop that's running an Intel core 2 duo T6400 CPU with 4GB of ram.  I was running Vista 64bits on a 300 GB spinner HDD.  Replaced the spinner with a 256 GB Samsung 830 SSD.  I was going to re-install Vista using the Dell restore CD but installed Windows 8, 64 bits instead.

Wow, the core 2 duo T6400 is running like a new computer.

Just one example:
Although I didn't time it, Photoshop 7 used to take about 30-45 seconds to load off the spinner.  Now it takes 6.5 seconds.

Boot and shutdown times are dramatically faster, though part of that is due to Windows 8.

So yes, installing a SSD in my older laptop was totally worth it.
Thanks to all who responded,
