I find that I'm turning the EV knob way down low in a lot of winter photos. One argument goes that photos ought to "see what the eye saw" - an argument I generally agree with. As our iris automatically opens up to reveal the shadowed stuff, perhaps we ought to do the same with the camera aperture? However, making the shadows black often seems to add back some of the drama that was also felt in the winter light at the real scene.

It just goes to show - although photography is about capturing reality, there is "reality" and there is "reality".

I had noticed the dialed down EV, you probably know I am a heretic and shoot jpg, but I have my SCN mode set to a default of 'backlit' which is the same as Smart range wich overlay two differently exposed images, so if I see a scene with huge DR I just turn the top dial to SCN and shoot, shadows are raised and no extra noise.

But I take your point about retaining some dynamics in the scene, but it may be at the expense of not revealing some amazing colours hidden in the shadows.

Photography is one big experiment I find.
