For the first two shots, it would be very difficult to focus for most any camera. Manual focus (infinity) is your best option.
For the third shot, it seems to me that you should have been able to focus somewhere. If nothing in the distance, I would have tried to lock focus on the fence to the right and let depth-of-field do it job for the rest of the scene.
For the fourth shot, I honestly don't understand why you had difficulty locking focus as it appears there is enough contrast in parts of the scene.
If you think the camera is the problem, I'd call Canon.
