It's all about perspective. You use a lens that allows the desired perspective. 35mm f2 gives you a shot you are happy with when you are including the whole body and some BG, so what lens will give you a head & shoulder shot from the same distance? 105mm is a good call. I often use an 85 indoors but thats partly because of contraints of available space and available light. Given the choice I'll go longer. I quite like my Sigma 150 or Nikon 180, or do it all with a Nikon 70~200 (though it's not great for candids - it's a bit too conspicuous).
