If he's a perfectionist and/or likes to take things as far as they can go then getting him a DSLR would seem to be the way to go. One of the Sony SLT cameras would probably be very well received and get used a lot. Suggest A57 as the huge EVF can be as data-rich as you like and the 3" LCD will swivel from the bottom. He can add a microphone too.

The only thing is... will a DSLR get taken everywhere like a P&S... it's not a bit of good having the best image quality camera sitting at home on a shelf. So find out if having a bigger camera may destroy spontanous creativity.  If that's the case then consider another compact with good picture IQ at lower ISO: Olympus XZ-2. Sample video here:

The learning cruve with DSLRs is no longer an issue these days as there are so many semi-intelligent auto modes.
