Thanks for the above suggestions but the problem was happening in both the develop and library modules. However, as suggested I've played about by increasing the sharpening a fair bit more than I have been doing before and there is a noticeable difference (for the better). Maybe I've been going too easy on the sharpening and these particular sets of photos can take more than I was allowing for? Anyway, they are a lot better now with no loss of quality. Sharpening and noise reduction (and the various slider settings) always have been one area I've struggled with to get a good balance.

I've also changed the catalogue preview settings as suggested - they were down at 1440 and medium. So I've set these to 2048 and high for now and again that looks better.
