Spatial Light Modulators

It appears that spatial light modulators already are used in consumer electronic devices, namely DLP home theater projectors. They contain micro devices that perform a similar function as light is projected out rather than reflected/focused in.

My question's intent was to learn what was possible in terms of both physics and cost, irrespective of the presence or absence of a mirror. However; I'm still not sure my question was answered. Would a device in front of the sensor, capable of controlling 0-100% of the available focused light at each photo site increase dynamic range, eliminate blown highlights, and permit more detailed shadows without increasing noise, and expand lens design among other benefits?

BTW, although some rumours may be turn out to be accurate, the overwhelming majority are as predictabe as phrenology.
