Re: Image Quality: Is newer better?

There is at least one family of cameras which provide better image quality at ample light: the Sigma DP family.

I have had A610 since 2006 (when it became apparent that it was leaving the market). My A610 is still working.

I was able to withstand the temptation to buy Sigma DP1 or DP2 for several years, but DP2 Merrill proved out to be too good, so I finally bought that. So now A610 is my backup camera.

I still like a lot about A610. Its image quality, swivel screen, incredible stamina of taking images with 4xAA batteries, raw and bracketing and much more with CHDK, very good hand grip (I can operate it with one hand on a bicycle), decent burst ability (2.5 fps), etc. They don't make such universal cameras any more.

As to the future, I would encourage Canon to start producing cameras with Foveon-style sensors.
