I think you nailed it. I use Windows Media to display video taken with my SX40. Everything works perfectly on an 8 year old desktop computer with XP; and a 5 year old laptop with Vista. I haven't tried Quick Time for any videos, but I would expect similar results.

If you haven't already, consider updating to the latest version of Quick Time. Maybe even try a "Tune-up" program to clean-up the Registry, remove broken links, remove duplicate files, etc.. And then try viewing the video.
