To me the best opponent to the G15 is the Fuji X10.

See the G15 as the natural successor to the XZ-1. Both are kayaking cameras for the brave: Small & a fast lens. With that said, the LX7 seems a G15 opponent. (Snapsort comparison of G15 & LX7 )

Both cameras are small for their class & have a fast lens. One is quick with a wider lens, while the other has much better zoom.

This brings up another point: How will the person use the camera? Is size, lens speed, zoom, indoor shooting, movies, long exposures, etc., etc. [I'll say it for you: Drifting way off topic.]

I put cameras that lack a built in finder in a different class, so I don't share that sentiment. I look at cameras that have no finders as "tweener" niche cameras that fall between ultra-compacts, and full on enthusiast compacts like the G series, X10, P7000/7100 cameras.
