I can nail focus all day long with that 50L and my center point but the peripherals ain't worth squat. It seems that there is no way to make the outers consistent with the centers if the above article is to be believed.

You might do better using the non-cross points. One gets a lot of comment here about the importance of cross points at the edges, but the truth is that a vertical detail sensor towards the edge of the screen can't work very well, because of the refraction angles required to sample from both sides of the taking lens' exit pupil. Trying to build a cross point there results compromises the space which could be used for a more effective linear point. So long as your subject has horizontal pattern detail, the linear point should work as well as a cross point, and if Canon has made the linear points larger, might work better than the edge cross point where the horizontal sensor array is doing little.

Thanks for this valuable info.

Any idea why DX cameras have their AF points spread wider ?

They don't, the frame is smaller.
