An iPad is most useful for remote control of the camera.

There are lightweight monitors about 8 inch diagonal with HDMI connection to say a D800 for an enlarged viewfinder image. Some video photographers work this way. I have not used one, and would expect some reflection issues working outdoors in sunlight, plus the need to close the camera viewfinder eyepiece.

With an iPad you can often work in shade. I have seen Nikon and Calumet demonstrate this type of setup at Nikon Pro events.

In a studio HDMI can connect direct to a large TV or to a laptop.

It seems to me Nikon are currently ahead of Canon with aps to link recent DSLR's with modern external viewing devices.
