External Flash not recognized by Canon T4i..any ideas???

so i bought Canon T4i bundle before a week which came with an external flash (Precision Design DSLR 300). I attached the flash to the hot shoe and took some pictures. I realized that the flash was not firing.

SO went to menu options for built-in flash control and I got a message "accessory attached". so that told me that camera recognized the flash, but when I went to next menu option to change the external flash settings, I got an error message "Incompatible flash or flash not turned on"....

The weird this is that the same external flash worked perfactly fine when I attached it to my Canon S5 IS point and shoot.

Just to rule out any possibility, I also attched that flash to my friend's T4i as we both bought the same bundle together and he is facing the same problem.

Can anyone please help me figure out the problem? I am not sure whether to return the whole bundle or buy another flash. I know the flash i bought is not great but it is supposed to work with all canon.
