Personally I use the 17-40mm...and for my purposes it works well. A lot of people like to trash this lens, but it can provide amazing results depending on what you need. For landscape shooting at f11 you will be hard pressed to see much improvement between the 17-40 and another prime. Meanwhile, you can easily attached filters, you have the convenience of a zoom, and you get L build quality for well under a $1000.

On the flipside, if you want to shoot wide open the 17-40 is quite soft...and slow....but how often are you shooting landscapes wide open??

hmm, the biggest attraction for the 17-40 is being wide open, right? Im thinking using a 24-70 to cover the rest of the wide/standard zoom range.
