"D" lenses - Question about using sub-dial for aperture

When I use the D7K sub-command dial to adjust aperture on my 85mm f/1.8D there are smaller increments available than when using the barrel ring. Does the dial actually adjust the blades physically like the ring does, or is there something else going on in the camera to accomplish the smaller f/stop steps?

thank you in advance...
