I haven't read the reviews. But I will say that on my D800, the 85 1.4 is my most dependable. I rarely shoot above f/2.8 with it (what's the point?!), and with all the learning about my lenses (again) on the D800, the 85 I know will just hit it. It's sharp at 1.4 and samurai sword ridiculously sharp above that. I've also learned that in LR, I view D3s files at 1:1 and D800 files at 1:3 to get something comparable, and to see critical focus. One quirk of the D800 is that it's more accurate in AF-S vs AF-C mode. Once I discovered that, I became more comfortable with the camera (and I'm encouraged by the firmware improvements of the D4.... hoping it finds its way to the D800). Honestly, don't worry. It's a great combo. If you're able to, try renting it for a weekend.
