You are correct.  RAID 1 gives you redundancy.  If one drive fails, the other drive keeps the array alive because the identical data is stored on both drives.  It also gives you a slight boost in read speed since the data can be read from both drives, thus reducing latency (if the controller supports it).  Note however, that while RAID 1 will protect against a drive failure, it is not a substitute for backing up your data.  There are other ways besides drive failure, in which data can be lost.  These include carelessness (accidentally delete files), viruses, and hardware failure (e.g. power supply loses regulation and fries both hard drives).
