The E means Electronic.

Thus all of them start with the E and followed by a dash.

PEN models are segmented by PEN, PEN Lite, PEN Mini. Thus you get E-P, E-PL, E-PM.

OM-D models are presumably to be similarly segmented but we only have E-M right now.

The numbers are generations of that form factor, E-P1 comes before E-P2.

There are only two generations of sensors, even though multiple generations of the form factors. This is because that even though bodies are updated each year, the sensor technology is slower.

Easiest way to tell which sensor is by looking at 12 MP vs. 16 MP in the product description.
