Playing the tourist in my own town again

Playing the tourist in my own town Gouda, Holland.

The first owner of this house, which was built around 1530, was called Jan de Metselaar.

Metselaar means mason/bricklayer. Because of his name, he decided to decorate the house with scenes from the legend of the Four Crowned Martyrs (or Sancti Quatuor Coronati in Latin) as they are the patron saints of builders.

I did not know the story, but this is what I found:

Detail from four vertical shots. D7000 and Nikkor 28-105mm. Stitched with Ptgui.

It is thought that there used to be a statue of Mary in the space in the middle.

One more Gouda canal scene. Trading ships sailing from the north of the country to the south and vice versa all had to pass through Gouda because this was the only route.

They had to spend at least one night and pay taxes. Clever thinking from these old Gouda administrators!

From two rows of six vertical shots. D7000 and Nikkor 2.8 20mm AIS. Stitched with Ptgui.

C&C always welcome.
