it just so happened that you obviously don't realize that the lenses are actually made in Japan using a currency called the yen apparently and not the USD.

The 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM was launched in April 2010. USDJPY = X 93.16.

The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II was launched in September 2012 USDJPY = X 78.89

The historical parity difference between currencies accounts for about 15% of the markups overall differences (30-35% vs. 70-75%) between the newly launched model and the previous model current price, at the time of replacement.

What about the arbitrary huge remaining difference?

your imagination. there wasn't any. when you account for currency, canon has eaten alot trying to keep the US price sane.  evidenced by the fact that canon usa has the lowest profit of any region in canon this last year.

the 24-70L 2.8 II had around a 5% markup over the MSRP of the original. same really with the 70-200L 2.8 IS. (24-70mm - 220,000Y to 230,000Y .. 70-200mm 280,000Y to 300,000Y

Those values can't be right. How could a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM ever have cost 300,000Y when it costs about 195,400Y right now?

Post your source, please.

canon camera museum - they have all the MSRP at the time of launch prices for every single lens that canon has made.

official Announcements on dpreview

on the 24-70L 2.8 announcement:

The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM measures 4.9 inches in length and weighs 33.5 ounces. The new lens, equipped with a lens hood, will be available at authorized Canon dealers in November and have a suggested retail price of $2,100.

´╗┐Now, the new one even WITH currency fluctuation came out at 2300 USD. yes, a HUGE difference .. right?

and here's the 70-200mm 2.8 L IS announcement

The new EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens will be supplied with a pro-quality lens pouch and dedicated lens hood. It will be available at authorized Canon dealers in September and have a suggested list price of $3,000.
