G12 photographing Outdoor Christmas lights: Max ISO?

Suspect that there are 2 approaching to photographing outdoor Christmas lights:

  1. Max out the aperture, then bump up the ISO until the exposure is right.  Use either a monopod or tripod to hold the shutter speed under a sec.  And MAYBE set the WB to Tungsten, but this can probably be done in post processing.
  2. Bracket, then use HDR software to create a composite.  Surmise that the G12's HDR scene mode will be fooled by the bright artificial lights.

Approach #1 seems my best bet, so for those of you that have done it, how high can you push the ISO before it becomes too grainy?

Background: Last year I was new with the camera, and did a lousy job photographing Christmas lights.  Know that the G12 is passe, but suspect a number of you still use one.
