I think that Scott is right; you may want to consider upping your budget for a ballhead..

and getting one that will fully meet your needs the first time around.  I've got an ultimate ballhead by Acratech.  It is well made and locks down tight with a D800 and 24-70 lens or 80-200 lens.  It is currently priced at 289, comes with a quick release clamp, and it uses Acra type plates.  You might also check out the Kirk ballheads.  I haven't used one but you could get some feedback from folks on this site.  I've got one of their L brackets and it is well made and works great.

The RSS ballheads get outstanding reviews by most users but they are pricey.  However, with $3000 invested in your camera, you ought to consider getting a ballhead that will maximize its performance when you need to use your tripod.
