Note that the  16-50 shots used f5.6.  Perhaps you could have gotten some softer corners at 16mm and f3.5, or whatever is the largest aperture.  However, keep in mind that many cameras probably also have a lot of distortion in the same situation and will need the same in-camera treatment and/or other compromise.  In other words, I don't think you're going to get a perfect wide angle lens without spending a lot of money.
