I have been back and forth on the weight issue - and the fun factor.

I believe I have talked myself into the fact that she will really only use this kit on a tripod at sporting events.

And, maybe on a tripod in the yard where she loves to take extremely close-up (it can't even be called Macro - she's that close!) photos of flowers, leaves.... the discussion of a macro lens will have to wait though:-)

She has her P&S which satisfies her fun factor right now. I'd rather get the sports photography kit for her now, then upgrade her P&S later for all the "teen gimmicky stuff" she'll use when she's just running around.

Hmm...

A tripod head that will allow fast tracking of sports action is expensive (as in the "Are you sitting down for this" price range).

a cheaper solution would be a monopod with a simple pivot head something like the Manfroto 679B monopod and 234RC tilt head which will allow her to track the action while supporting the weight of the camera/lens combo. It also has the advantage of being a lot more portable than a tripod.
