First, the 80-200 he's asking about, and the one about which I replied, isn't AF-S. That said, I've never timed the focus from one end to the other. But, on my D200, it was able to keep focus on my granddaughter racing from the base path to home plate at the end of the inning -  i.e., coming towards the camera.
