I own a D600. The viewfinder does not change. However, when in DX mode the viewfinder shows a black outline of the DX area. You can still see the entire FX field of view, but the sensor will only record the area within the black lines (rectangle). Hope that is clear. Your Megapixels will be 10.2 in DX mode. This is, depending on what you are shooting, plenty for an 8x10 photo, (and I am guessing here) plenty for 11x14 as well.

See page 90 of the manual (there is a sticky on the forum for the manual) for diagram of this.

FX uses 36mm by 24mm (ALL of the sensor area, this is why it is called Full Frame), DX uses 24mm by 16mm (of the sensor area).

Look at page 95 for the actual pixel areas used.
