Re: ATOMOS Ninja 2 Video Recorder

The D800 has a relatively weak anti-aliasing optical low pass filter which reduces moire in photographs using the full resolution of the 36.6 MP sensor.  The D800E has a modified OLPF without anti-aliasing to increase the sharpness of the image. When these cameras record video, the image is compressed from 36.6 MP to 1920 x 1080, or ~ 2 MP by line skipping, which produces significant moire when scanning a scene.  The AA in the D800 OLPF has little or any effect on moire in video mode.  Mosaic Engineering has developed a custom video AA filter for the D800/800E (VAF-D800) which is inserted into the front of the mirror box in front of the sensor but behind the lens.  I have recorded many videos with the VAF-D800E and find that it virtually eliminates moire.  It is pretty pricey ($385) but well worth the investment if you plan to use the D800/800E for video.  Hope this helps.--
